From Accounting to Stationery Design and Running a Business While Raising a Family with Dondrea Owens

Do you worry about how you can juggle anything else while running your business? Dondrea Owens was an accountant before she choose to leave her job to pursue a stationery business. Stationary is near and dear to my heart as that’s what I was doing professionally in corporate America before pursuing Pinegate Road full-time and I love all things stationery. She also has two little kids so as I prep myself to have a family and build my business in a way that works for my lifestyle, I loved Dondrea’s advice and I know it will be perfect for anyone who wants to do something else while running their business.

Topics we cover:

— Transitioning out of her work as an accountant and starting her own business so she could stay home with her kids
— How realizing that she didn’t have a hobby led her to pursue scrapbooking and then ultimately stationery design
— The evolution of Dondrea’s business from just starting out to quitting her full-time job
— Applying the skills we learned in our corporate jobs to running our businesses
— Using process sheets to put some of your business tasks on autopilot
— Keeping a flexible calendar to make it easier to manage running a business and raising a family
— How Dondrea’s free time has changed since having kids
— Finding time to yourself when you have kids
— Getting help in your business so that you can focus on your zone of genius
— Building a business slowly over time so that it’s sustainable, profitable, and you know exactly what your mission is
— Why Dondrea no longer offers custom stationery anymore and instead focuses on creating collections that she only has to design once
— Balancing the creative and business sides of your business
— Staying consistent with your social media marketing by batching it over a few days a week
— Using screenshots and notes on our phones to capture inspiration
— That having kids has fuelled Dondrea’s hustle and helped her use her time much more effectively
— Living the mantra “Done is better than perfect”
— Having accountability buddies who help keep you on track with your projects
— The measures of success at a full-time job versus being at home
