REFLECTION | 3 | taking breaks

taking breaks - A reflection my Kelsey of Pinegate Road

I’ve always found it so necessary when working on a project to walk away for at least a second. There was one moment my first year here in Savannah where I distinctly remember my brain being so clouded by ideas and perceptions of what should be for an assignment that I couldn’t find my way around to the other side. I decided to take a break, went to the gym, and could almost literally see that cloud start to disappear. All that was needed was a little break to find that new perspective and find clarity on the situation. From this came one of my most conceptual projects—I vowed to keep working out 😉 I’m one to get really caught up in the moment, and I’ve realized that in all aspects of my life breaks are what are needed most in those situations. Here’s where you let everything settle and you can finally find out what’s important for you to pick back up again. We can’t juggle everything all the time, as much as I’d like to think we can.

With my weirdo type-a personality, this sure is a hard one for me. Even when I do schedule time off, in the past I’ve tried to fill that up with vacations. They are great to have, but when you come back from this ‘break’ feeling even more exhausted than when you started, sometimes it’s just not worth it. This year I’ve made an intentional decision to take breaks on my breaks and actually enjoy that time to do the things I tell myself I “never have the time to do.” Sometimes you need to take the time to binge-watch television or walk around your city for a while.

I finished my finals yesterday—side note: did you see the first weight of my new typeface? I’m stupid excited about that one! Keep checking back for the second weight, and hopefully a release date. Anyways, next week I have some lovely, talented, wonderful ladies taking over for me to help launch a new series while I take a much-needed staycation. This will be my first ever guest post week—what! At the end of the week we’ll be celebrating taking breaks with an awesome giveaway—and on top of that my parents are coming in for the weekend. I’m so honored and grateful that these ladies were able to make this break possible for me—thank you!! While I’ll definitely be working more on my thesis and some job search material, I have items like ‘make macrons’  and ‘read in the park’ on my to-do list. That my friends, feels amazing. I’m really hoping to gain some clarity of my thesis and come back next quarter ready to tackle that. I hope you all get to take a little break over the weekend, even if that’s sitting on your couch with a hot cup of tea and a funny book. You deserve it! Speaking of books, I procrasti-read this over the past couple weeks and it was a hoot, just saying.

Happy weekend friends!
